Coordinates: 38°50′N, 105°40′E Alxa League (Mongolian: Alshaa aimag, Chinese: 阿拉善盟; pinyin: Ālāshàn Méng; Wade-Giles: Alashan Meng) is one of 12 prefecture level divisions and three extant leagues of Inner Mongolia. The league borders Mongolia to the north, Bayan Nur to the northeast, Wuhai und Ordos to the east, Ningxia to the southeast, and Gansu to the south und west. The capital is Bayan Hot (older name: 定远营 Dingyuanying) in the aimag's Left Banner.

Demographics

In the 2000 census, there were 196,279 inhabitants. Alxa is the least populated region of Inner Mongolia.

Administrative Subdivisions

Alxa is divided into three banners:

  • Alxa Left Banner (阿拉善左旗), 80,412 km², approx. 140,000 inhabitants (2004), administrative center: Bayan Hot (巴彦浩特镇);
  • Alxa Right Banner (阿拉善右旗), 72,556 km², approx. 20,000 inhabitants (2004), administrative center: Ehen Hudug (额肯呼都格镇);
  • Ejin-Banner (额济纳旗), 114,606 km², approx. 20,000 inhabitants (2004), administrative center: Dalai Hub (达来呼布镇).
