College career
Carroll attended Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta before coming to Arkansas. Once there, Carroll excelled in two sports as both a sprinter for the track team and a cornerback for the football team. He finished his college football career with the following statistics:
- 140 tackles (7 for losses)
- 25 passes defensed
- 4 interceptions
- 2 fumble recoveries
- 2 forced fumbles
- 12 quarterback hurries
NFL career
- 34 games played with the Green Bay Packers
- 28 games in which Carroll started
- 33 total penalty flags thrown against Carroll
- 26 penalties called for coverage violations such as pass interference, illegal contact, and holding
- 256 penalty yards enforced as a result of 24 infractions that were not declined or offset by another penalty
- 11 touchdowns Carroll allowed in coverage
- 3 interceptions by Carroll
In October 2006, the Jaguars signed Carroll, a restricted free agent, to another contract. Terms were not released.[1] In December 2007 the New York Jets gave Carroll a tryout but did not sign him to a contract.[1]
Criticism
Carroll earned the nickname "Batman" from his days of playing youth football, where he repeatedly jumped over the opposing center in a game. In the NFL, Carroll is known around the league by the nicknames "Grabby Smurf," for his tendency to commit illegal contact penalties, and also by the name "Highway 28," in the sense that opposing receivers speed past him into the end zone. In Week 4 of the 2006 season, the Green Bay Packers played the Philadelphia Eagles and Ahmad Carroll was burned for two costly touchdowns by Greg Lewis, which proved to be the final straw as he was cut shortly afterwards.
Arrest & Release
On May 5, 2007, Carroll was arrested around 3 a.m. on drug and gun charges. Carroll, 23, was released on bond after attending court at 9 a.m. He is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of MDMA (ecstasy), and possession of a firearm during the commitment of a felony. As a result of this incident, on May 7, 2007 the Jacksonville Jaguars waived Carroll. [2] Carroll could potentially file a grievance against the team, as NFL teams are not allowed to part ways with a player for legal troubles.
