The memorial is located at the eastern entrance to the U St/African-Amer Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Metro station. It was transferred to the National Park Service on October 27, 2004, and is managed by National Mall and Memorial Parks. The museum, located two blocks west of the memorial in the historic U Street neighborhood, opened to the public in January 1999.
