Rivalry with Turbine Potsdam - The National Derby

The rivalry with former Eastern champions 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam began in the early 2000s, as Potsdam, who also had become an autonomous club with no backing from a male counterpart, began ascending in the Bundesliga. The rivalry has spilled into the DFB Pokal and even the European Cup, when Potsdam qualified by taking the national title off European winners Frankfurt and succeeded them as European champions. Aside from the championship and geographical rivalry, there are also differing notions of building up teams - Frankfurt, in Western "capitalist" fashion, prefers to poach local and foreign players, while Potsdam, an Eastern, former Communist outfit, prefers to build up young players from its academy. The defection of Petra Wimbersky and Karolin Thomas from Potsdam to Frankfurt added to the rivalry, as the two clubs had an unwritten agreement not to poach each other's players without first consulting the German Football Association. Due to the lack of hooliganism in the women's game, this rivalry has developed healthy competition in the Bundesliga and has strongly contributed to the unified national team's success. There is a potential Old Firm-style problem, however (the two clubs are currently the highest-earning in the women's Bundesliga), that may hinder the league's competitiveness. [1]
