ZECHARIAH, BOOK OF

One of the twelve *minor *prophets.

The prophecies are dated between 520 and 518 BCE and are concerned with the restoration of *Jerusalem after the Babylonian *exile. It is possible that Chs 9–14 were composed by a different author from that of Chs 1–8. According to the *aggadah, Zechariah was one of three prophets who returned with the exiles to the *promised land and, after their death, prophecy departed from *Israel.
