Writing is one of the four language processes – the other three are speaking, listening and reading. It is a powerful organiser of thinking and reasoning and enables us to communicate meaning in a relatively permanent form to an absent audience across space and time.
In an increasingly complex society people need to be able to write effectively to meet many different purposes. So it is not surprising that learning to write is a major component of the primary curriculum. However, the journey towards becoming a competent and enthusiastic writer is a demanding one and children need skilled and imaginative support on that journey.
