The vomer (from Latin, vomer: a plough) is a thin bone that runs along the middle of the nasal cavity, or nose; hence vomeronasal is the term that describes this region) The vomeronasal organ is a second source of olfactory input (see OLFACTION) in addition to the OLFACTORY EPITHELIUM and is present in all mammals (except the marine mammals).
Situated in the nasal passageway, it has sensory receptors which transmit to the ACCESSORY OLFACTORY BULB. It is notably important in the detection of PHEROMONES, amongst other things.
