Dictionary of Biological Psychology

viscera

(The term VISCERA is plural; the singular is viscus, directly from Latin) The viscera are the internal organs contained within the chest and the abdomen: heart, lungs, liver, stomach, kidneys and so on; visceral is the adjectival form, and is often used not just to describe body organs but in the sense of being opposite to cerebral or rational.

A visceral reaction would be one that was spontaneous and immediate, not thought about at all.
