A Popular Dictionary of Buddhism

Vedānta

The end or consummation of the doctrine of the Vedas. One of the six orthodox systems of Hindu philosophy. Teaches the panentheistic doctrine of the Brahman as the Reality unifying all phenomena, and the identity of man’s real Self with that ultimate Reality.

Nothing Real exists outside Brahman: ‘There is One only, without a second’. This doctrine is set forth in a variety of forms in the scriptures called Upanishads (q.v.). Its chief exponent was Sankara c. A.D. 800.
