A group of north Germanic gods, including among their number → Freyr, → Freya, and → Njörd: all three of them being fertility deities.

The struggle between the Aesir (→ As) and the Vanir, and the subsequent reconciliation between them, may reflect the opposition between two ways of life—that of the peasant and that of the warrior. The Vanir countenanced marriage between siblings, and they were master magicians (seidr).
