Originally established in 1801 with the Union between Great Britain and Ireland. It was established in its present form in 1922 with the partitioning of the Republic of Ireland (formerly the Irish Free State).
The United Kingdom has no written constitution and, although the monarch is deemed to be the Head of State, the supreme authority in practice is exercised by the Government of the day. The United Kingdom is also known simply as ‘Britain’. The UK joined the European Economic Community (now the European Community (EC)) in 1973.
