Dictionary of Environmental Health
A form of ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION with a short WAVELENGTH just outside the visible spectrum to humans of between that of X-RAYS and visible LIGHT. Ultraviolet radiation is capable of causing photochemical reactions. There are three types of UV radiation, designated UVA, UVB and UVC.
UVA has a long wavelength and contributes mainly to ageing of the skin. UVB is blocked naturally by clouds and is the type that causes burning of the skin. UVC does not naturally come to earth, but can be generated artificially and is used as a bactericidal light. Contrary to popular opinion, all types of UV radiation are considered to be a risk factor in the generation of SKIN CANCER; none can be considered ‘safe’.
