Ukko

(‘old man’) The Finnish god of thunder, also known as Isäinen (‘grandad’). When he drives his wagon along a stony path in the heavens, sparks fly from the hooves of his horses.

When it thunders, people say that Ukko is rolling big stones or grinding corn. In incantations and magic spells he is described as having such attributes as a blue cloak, a fiery pelt, a sword, an axe and a hammer. In Karelia and in Ingermanland, the prophet Elias (Elijah) takes the place of Ukko.
