Dictionary of Biological Psychology

tuberoinfundibular dopamine system

A system of short-axoned DOPAMINE neurons found in the region of the HYPOTHALAMUS.

The cell bodies of this system originate in the ARCUATE NUCLEUS and PERIVENTRICULAR NUCLEUS of the HYPOTHALAMUS and project to the MEDIAN EMINENCE and PITUITARY GLAND (intermediate and posterior lobes). The dopaminergic terminals regulate the secretion of the lactating hormone PROLACTIN, exerting an inhibitory effect upon secretion.
