Dictionary of Biological Psychology
Animals undertaking psychological or behavioural tests will often need to be trained to perform a task: to work in an OPERANT CHAMBER or to run MAZES for example.
Other tests require no training but just examine spontaneous behaviour of one sort or another measurement of LOCOMOTION or OPEN FIELD behaviour for example. In LESION or DRUG studies, training can be given before some brain manipulation or after. In the former case one therefore examines the effects of brain manipulation on ACQUISITION of a learnt task while in the latter one examines how a treatment affects RETENTION of a task.
