TOSAFOT

(Hebrew. ‘Additions’) Anthologies of comments on the *Talmud.

The Tosafot are records of discussions in the *yeshivot of France and Germany in the 12th Century. Its aim was to develop the commentary of *Rashi and leading practitioners included his son-in-law and grandsons. Today the *Talmud is printed to include *Mishnah, *gemara, Rashi’s commentary (known as *Perush) and the Tosafot (often called *GaPaT). Later the study of Tosafot was associated with *Pilpul particularly in Poland and Germany.
