Dictionary of Biological Psychology
Tissue culture involves growing cells (see CELL) taken from multicellular animals (rather than just cultivating single-celled animals) in vitro in the laboratory.
While there is little to be gained from such studies of a psychological or behavioural nature, tissue culture is important for NEUROSCIENCE. Questions about the regulation of cell growth, DEVELOPMENT and interactions can be answered using culture methods, and tissue can be grown for use in TRANSPLANTATION studies. Tissue culture also reduces the need for so many animals to be used in research: one animal can provide a stock of tissues that can then be maintained in culture; see ANIMAL WELFARE.
