Third World country

Nowadays, a somewhat misleading term used originally to describe a country belonging to the less developed areas of the world, particularly to those of Africa and Asia but also including to some extent those of South America. The term arose to provide a convenient shorthand to distinguish such countries from those of the First World (i.e.

of industrialised capitalist states) and those of the Second World (i.e. the predominantly communist countries).
