Dictionary of Biological Psychology
The telencephalon is the most rostral structures of the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, and is represented by the CEREBRAL HEMISPHERES (see HEMISPHERE). The term CEREBRUM is usually used synonymously with the cerebral hemispheres.
The two sides of the cerebral hemispheres are interconnected via the CORPUS CALLOSUM. The superficial part of the cerebral hemispheres is the CEREBRAL CORTEX, thought to be the most important site of cognitive and other higher functions. Deep in the cerebral hemispheres are the BASAL GANGLIA, which are involved in motor co-ordination (and other processes to do with behavioural control). The structures that line the inner border of the cerebral hemispheres comprise the LIMBIC SYSTEM, which is important in emotional behaviours.
