A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

TANNA

A *sage of the 1st and 2nd Centuries CE. *Johanan ben Zakkai, *Akiva, *Ishmael ben Elisha and *Judah ha-Nasi are counted among the Tannaim.

In the *Talmud they are distinguished from the later *Amoraim. During the era of the Tannaim, the *Temple in *Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE and the *Bar Kokhba revolt was suppressed in 135 CE. Despite these disasters the Tannaim succeeded in maintaining the Great *Sanhedrin, codifying the *Oral Law (see *MISHNAH) and establishing several *academies of higher learning.
