The record of the discussions of the *amoraim on the *Mishnah. The Jerusalem Talmud was compiled in the late 5th Century CE and the Babylonian Talmud in the late 6th Century. It includes the Mishnah with its commentaries which are known as *Gemara.
The Babylonian Talmud was recognised as the supreme authority by the 11th century. It consists of discursive discussions and includes *halakhah, *aggadah, folk-law, *customs, *prayers, proverbs and accounts of ceremonial. Altogether the entire text, written in *Aramaic, consists of approximately two and a half million words. It is the major subject of study in the *yeshivot and its study is regarded as an important religious duty for Jewish men.
