Dictionary of Biological Psychology
(from Latin, sutura: seam) There are two meanings for the term suture: (i) the verb ‘to suture’ means to stitch a wound (either with suture silk or specialized wound clips); and as a noun, SUTURE can refer to the stitches themselves; and one can speak of a wound having been sutured (that is, closed with sutures); see STEREOTAXIC SURGERY.
(ii) As a noun, suture can also refer to the points where bones meet. For example, the various bones of the SKULL meet at sutures and the skull landmarks BREGMA and LAMBDA represent points where sutures intersect.
