M.Gentry, in an article in Reading Teacher (1982), identified a number of stages that teachers need to recognise. Learning to spell is a process gradually acquired, perhaps over a period of several years. Some children experience little difficulty in acquiring good spelling on their own, others have to be carefully taught. (See also dyslexia)
