Dictionary of British Education

spelling

Another controversial issue in the English curriculum. The dispute centres around two issues: first, how spelling should be taught; second, what is appropriate at various ages.

M.Gentry, in an article in Reading Teacher (1982), identified a number of stages that teachers need to recognise. Learning to spell is a process gradually acquired, perhaps over a period of several years. Some children experience little difficulty in acquiring good spelling on their own, others have to be carefully taught. (See also dyslexia)

This is the complete article, containing 81 words (approx. 1 page at 300 words per page).
