SOUTHERN KINGDOM

The ancient kingdom of *Judah.

The *Israelite kingdom was divided after the death of King *Solomon in 930BCE and the two southern tribes, Judah and Benjamin remained loyal to the *Davidic kingship in contrast to the ten northern tribes (see *NORTHERN KINGDOM). In 586 the Southern kingdom was conquered by the Babylonians and the inhabitants were taken into *exile. Later the exiles were allowed to return and under *Ezra and *Nehemiah, the *temple was rebuilt and the kingdom restored under foreign rule.
