Dictionary of Environmental Health

sound

A form of energy, transmitted by pressure waves in air or other material, such as potentially to produce the sensation of hearing. The pressure waves are generated by vibration. In humans the range of detection of frequencies is generally taken as being between 20–20,000 Hz (see HERTZ).

The speed (i.e. velocity) of sound varies with the density of the atmosphere and consequently with altitude. At sea level the speed of sound is around 1,220 km/hr (i.e. around 760 miles/hr).
