A division of the PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: in contrast to the AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM, which prin-cipally targets the internal the body, the somatic nervous system is mainly concerned with initiating movement in and receiving information from the SKIN, MUSCLES and joints of the body.
