Soma

In ancient India, the intoxicating drink made from the soma plant, which played a crucial role in the Vedic sacrificial rites and which was personified as a deity Soma was regarded as the vital sap in all living beings, and its ritual extraction was a symbol of cosmic processes.

The gods drink soma from the bowl of the moon, and soma confers immortality (amrita). In the post-Vedic age, Soma is a customary name for the moon-god.
