(Na+) Sodium is an ALKALI metal; sodium ions (Na+) (see ION) are critical for the proper functioning of brain tissue (see for example ACTION POTENTIAL) and there are specific mechanisms in brain to detect sodium and stimulate intake in the face of depletion (see SODIUM APPETITE).

The principal salt of sodium is sodium chloride (NaCl) which is of course table salt.
