Dictionary of Biological Psychology

sodium nitroprusside

One of a group of compounds known as NITRIC OXIDE (NO) donors: nitric oxide can be synthesized by a process involving enzymatic reactions (in which NITRIC OXIDE SYNTHASE [NOS] converts L-ARGININE to L-CITRULLINE) or by a chemical process involving the NO donors.

In high concentrations sodium nitroprusside is a neurotoxin (see NEUROTOXINS), lending support to the hypothesis that dysfunctional NO activity could be involved in conditions in which there is neuronal cell death.
