skin

The largest single organ of the body. It serves several functions including physically protecting the inner organs and body structures, regulating the body’s temperature and providing a barrier to infectious agents.

It comprises two distinct portions, the EPIDERMIS (or EPITHELIUM), which is the outer protective layer, and the corium. The latter is also known as the ‘cutis vera’, ‘true skin’ or ‘dermis’ and contains many nerve fibres and blood vessels.
