SIN

Breaking the *commandments of *God. The *rabbis taught that the main cause for sin was the *yetser ha-ra (the evil inclination) and in general sins of commission are taken more seriously than sins of omission.

The cure for temptation is thought to be the study of the *Torah. In the days of the *Temple, guilt for sin could be removed by *sacrifice, but after the Temple’s destruction, *redemption could only be found through *prayer and *fasting.
