SHULHAN ARUKH

(Hebrew ‘The Prepared Table’). *Code of Jewish Law written by Joseph *Caro.

The Shulhan Arukh summarises the commandments governing daily and *Sabbath activities, the laws of everyday life (e.g. *purity, *mourning, *kashrut), the laws of *marriage and *divorce and civil and criminal law. It was amended for the Ashkenazim by Moses *Isserles and is generally accepted as the most authoritative code. First printed in 1565, it has been the subject of many commentaries and is much studied.
