Shōtoku, Prince (Jap.)

574–622. One of the greatest men in Japanese history.

Suzuki calls him the father of Japanese Bsm. As Prince Regent to his aunt, the Empress Suiko, he used his patronage and genius to see that Bsm. struck root in Japanese soil. He built many monasteries, the most famous being Hōryūji (q.v.) near Nara, and wrote commentaries on three famous Sutras, the Saddharma Pundarīka (Hokekyō), the Srīmālā (Shōmangyō) and the Vimalakīrti (Yuimakyō).
