Shemini Atzeret

(Hebrew: “Eighth day of convocation”) The eighth and final day of the festival of SUKKOT (Leviticus 23:34–36), understood within post-biblical Judaism to be a separate festival unto itself.

In the synagogue, a special prayer that abundant rain will fall in the Land of Israel is said, and, as on the final day of all festivals, memorial prayers are recited. In the Land of Israel, Shemini Atzeret coincides with the festival of SIMAT TORAH; in the diaspora, Simat Torah falls on the following day.
