SHEMINI ATZERET

The eighth day of *Sukkot.

In *Israel it is celebrated on the same day as *Simhat Torah, but in the *diaspora Simhat Torah is celebrated on the second day of Shemini Atzeret. It is observed as a day of solemn assembly and is kept on Tishri 22/23. A special *prayer for rain is recited and the *yikzor memorial prayer is said among the *Ashkenazim.
