Found in banana fruit, Musa sapientum (Musaceae), tomatoes, Lycopersicon esculentum (Solanaceae), the stinging hairs of the nettle, Urtica dioica (Urticaceae), and those of cowhage, Mucuna pruriens (Leguminosae).

Neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It does not pass the blood-brain barrier, so its precursor, 5-hydroxytryptophan (q.v.), is used clinically to treat depression.
