schwa (also neutral vowel)

From Hebrew , diacritical vowel sign for a missing vowel or for the unstressed [ә]. In English, schwa is an unstressed vowel produced with the tongue in its (neutral) resting position, e.g. [pәlayt] polite. In Bulgarian gălăb [´gәłәb], the first occurrence of schwa is stressed.
