Dictionary of British Education

schema (plural schemata)

A technical term used by Piaget and other developmental psychologists to refer to a conceptual structure that is used to interpret information in the external world perceived by the senses.

A schema is, therefore, a kind of hypothesis set up in the brain to make sense of reality. When a child (or adult) encounters a new situation that does not fit in with an existing schema, the individual will either be puzzled or adapt the schema or schemata to try to make better sense of reality.
