Dictionary of Environmental Health
An opening in a wall comprising two glazed panels (the ‘sashes’) that slide parallel to each other to provide the opening portion, the whole being housed in a frame fixed in the building structure. Since the sashes always, in normal operation, stay within the frame, the opening portion is never more than 50 per cent of the total window area.
There are two types of sash window.
The first is the ‘vertical’ or ‘balanced’ type in which the sashes are supported by counterweights attached to pulleys by cords and move up and down within the frame, each sash resting as positioned by being balanced against the counterweight. This type is also known as the ‘double-hung’ sash window. The second and less common type is the ‘sliding sash’ in which the sashes move horizontally across each other. These do not require counterweights as their position is maintained by gravity and friction.
