SAMUEL

(c. 11th Century BCE) Biblical *judge and early *prophet. Samuel was closely involved with the founding of the monarchy in *Israel and *anointed both *Saul and *David.

His exploits are recorded in the First Book of *Samuel, Chs. 1–16. In the *aggadic tradition, he was said to be the author of the Book of *Judges and to be the father of the prophet *Joel. His tomb near *Jerusalem was a place of *pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.
