Wise men.
Sages were Jewish leaders from the time of the Second *Temple until the Arab conquest of the Eastern Mediterranean. The Sages upheld the *Oral Law and, after the destruction of the Temple, were highly influential in the schools of *Bet *Hillel and Bet *Shammai and then through the *academies. The term is frequently used in the later period as an alternative to *Rav or *Rabbi.
