SADDUCEES

Sect of the Second *Temple period. The Sadducees were the hereditary *priests of the *Temple and supervised the *sacrifices.

The name is probably derived from *Zadok, King *Solomon’s *High Priest. They dominated the *Sanhedrin and were in frequent conflict with the *Pharisees. They rejected the *Oral Law and only accepted the authority of the written *Torah. In the *Talmud, they are also called *Boethusians, but after the destruction of the Temple in 70CE, they had no clear role and disappeared from history (see also *KOHEN).
