Offering to *God. Worship in the *Temple in *Jerusalem centred round the offering of sacrifices. *Sin offerings were made by the priests on the *festivals as a propitiation for the nation’s *sin and were also made for individuals (see *TRESPASS OFFERING). Burnt offerings of animals were made twice daily with two additional lambs offered each *Sabbath. To accompany the animal offerings, meal offerings were also made and *libations were poured out.
Details of the Temple ritual are preserved in the *Talmud. Although the Temple was thought to be the only legitimate place for sacrifice, the *high places of the *Southern Kingdom continued their rituals and sacrifices were offered in the *Northern Kingdom at Bethel and Dan. After the *Exile, the *Samaritans offered their sacrifices on Mount *Gerizim. After the destruction of the Temple in 70CE, *prayer and *fasting took the place of sacrifice. The *synagogue liturgy is based on the times of the Temple sacrifices (see *SHAHARIT, *MINHAH, *MUSAF). However, the hope of the restoration of the Temple and the sacrificial system is preserved to this day in the *Orthodox liturgy. The *Progressive movements do not look forward to the restoration of sacrifice.
