SAADIAH GAON

(882–942) Babylonian Jewish leader. Saadiah Gaon was head of the academy at *Sura although he came into conflict with the *exilarch of the time.

He was a prolific author, producing works on *halakhah, *philosophy, *liturgy and grammar. In his lifetime he was recognised for his learning and piety. He was the first mediaeval Jewish *philosopher to try to reconcile *Biblical revelation with current philosophical thinking and he was tireless in his efforts to persuade the *Karaites that the *Oral Law was indispensable to the understanding of the text of the Bible.
