ROSH HA-SHANAH

(Hebrew. ‘New Year’) The Jewish *New Year. Rosh ha-Shanah is celebrated on Tishri 1.

Traditionally it is believed that all human beings are judged on Rosh ha-Shanah; the virtuous are inscribed in the *Book of Life, the wicked in the Book of Death and the in-betweens have a ten day period of grace until *Yom Kippur. (See *TEN DAYS OF REPENTANCE). The *shofar is blown during the Rosh ha-Shanah services to call the people to repentance and it is customary to eat something sweet in the hope of a sweet year ahead. Among the *Orthodox, the *tashlikh ceremony is performed in the afternoon of the first day (in the *Diaspora, Rosh Ha-Shanah is celebrated for two days).
