A type of rule taken from mathematics that is formally characterized by the fact that the symbol to the left of the arrow also occurs to the right: e.g.
N→AP+N. Here N is the recursive element, which ensures that the rule can be used on itself. Wherever the symbol N occurs, the expression to the right of the arrow can be inserted, which in turn contains the symbol N.
