It is generally acknowledged that children’s progress in English needs to be carefully monitored.
In the CLPE Reading Book Barrs and Thomas pinpoint some characteristics of a good record keeping system. They are thinking of reading, but the principles apply more generally.
A good record keeping system needs to:
• be based on sound educational principles
• include the collection of different kinds of evidence
• be a cumulative picture of a child’s progress over time
• communicate clearly to other teachers and to parents and the children themselves
• be a collaborative process involving teachers, parents and children.
