Dictionary of Biological Psychology

reading

Reading is most often of interest within biological psychology when presenting as a problem (see DYSLEXIA). The normal mechanisms by which reading is acquired and maintained are generally of more interest to COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY.

Models of reading, such as that proposed by Ellis & Young, involve (1) a visual analysis system for the recognition of material (a mechanism for GRAPHEME-PHONEME conversion is also required: auditory analysis has to feature for integration of spoken words); (2) a LEXICON for WORD RECOGNITION; (3) a SEMANTIC analysis system (for recognition of word meaning); (4) a system of SPEECH PRODUCTION.
