A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

RASHI

(Solomon ben Isaac) (1040–1105) *Biblical and *Talmudic commentator. Rashi’s academy in France became one of the most famous in Europe. He wrote commentaries on all the books of the Bible except *Ezra, *Nehemiah and *Chronicles which were largely based on *midrashic sources.

They were hugely popular and his work influenced Christian as well as Jewish readers. His commentary on the *Pentateuch was the first Hebrew book ever to be printed. He also produced commentaries on the *Talmud. To this day Rashi’s Commentaries remain among the most studied Jewish works.
