A Dictionary of Epithets and Terms of Address

Radar

Used to address a radar officer in the Royal Navy in Sylvester, by Edward Hyams.

The term would now suggest to a wide audience the nickname of Radar O’Reilly, the character in the long-running television series M.A.S.H. starring Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce. Gary Burghoff played the part of Radar, so-named for his uncanny ability to know before anyone else what was going to happen next, to ‘hear’ things before anyone else heard them.
